Transfer a Domain from GoDaddy to Cloudflare

GoDaddy pulls you in with aggressive first-year pricing, then renews a .com around $20–22 — while Verisign's wholesale price is about $10. Cloudflare Registrar resells at exactly that cost. Across a 20-domain portfolio, the difference tops $200 every single year.

The principle: never pay for a transfer "on top"

A little-known ICANN rule makes transfers effectively free in practice: the year you pay at transfer time is added to your current expiration date. Transferring 30 days before expiry is therefore exactly the same as renewing — but at Cloudflare's at-cost price (zero markup) instead of GoDaddy's retail price. You don't lose a single day you already paid for.

Step 1 — Move your DNS first (free, today)

Domain registration and DNS management are independent. Start by creating the zone on Cloudflare (Free plan), verify every record was imported — especially MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC if the domain receives email — then replace the nameservers at GoDaddy with the two Cloudflare assigns you. Your site and email keep working: during propagation, the old and new zones serve identical answers.

Step 2 — Prepare the transfer on the GoDaddy side

In the GoDaddy domain portfolio: domain settings → "Transfer domain away from GoDaddy". GoDaddy walks you through a retention flow (last-minute discounts) before it: unlocks the domain, then emails the authorization code. Turn off auto-renew in the domain settings.

Mind the 60-day lock: if you recently changed registrant contact details (owner name or email), ICANN forbids transfers for 60 days. Don't touch WHOIS data right before a migration.

Step 3 — Transfer at Cloudflare

At day −30: Domain Registration → Transfer domains, enter the emailed code, pay the year at wholesale. You can approve the outbound transfer in GoDaddy (Transfers → out) to complete within hours.
